Outdoor Beams Outdoor beams provide an early warning for possible intrusion to a property and are designed primarily to protect lives. The objective is to create a safe zone away from the property, providing home owners additional time to react prior to the threat of an intrusion. Outdoor beams address the inherent weakness of a traditional alarm system consisting of indoor passive infra red detectors and magnetic door and window contacts which often warn of an intrusion only once the intruder is inside the property which increases the risk of a possible violent confrontation.
Outdoor beams should not be considered as a replacement to a traditional alarm system but rather as an additional security layer. Outdoor beams usually use a variety of technologies including infra red and micro wave and may allow the installer various detection options to suite different conditions. The objective is to provide maximum detection and minimum false alarm rate. Some detectors may automatically switch between detection options when weather conditions change.
Outdoor beams may be connected directly to an existing alarm control panel and assigned an alarm zone in the same way as indoor PIR's or door contacts, creating an integrated alarm system. If wireless beams are used, a wireless receiver is required.
An alternative is to install the outdoor beams as a standalone system, separate from the indoor alarm system. In this case one can use a separate alarm controller for monitoring and control of the outdoor beams, for example: IDS Alarms
Whilst some outdoor beams have a built in speaker, this is not intended as the warning mechanism and usually a siren or external buzzer is required. |
